Adventure Tour Guide

If you enjoy working with people and have a sense of adventure… Imagine flying through the jungle and over waterfalls on Hawaii’s safest zipline, rappelling down the waterfall, gliding through the rainforest on a Segway Personal Transporter or biking along the tropical Old Mamalahoa Highway, all while sharing the amazing beauty of Hawaii with guests from around the world!

Employee Status: Part Time / Seasonal

Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $17.00/hour-$22.00/hour, depending on experience

Work Schedule: Up to 10 hours per day. Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.

Reports To: Tour Manager / Operations Manager

The Role 

The Guide role is responsible for delivering physically and emotionally engaging adventure tours on our zipline course, while demonstrating excellent customer service. A “guest comes first” attitude is expected. Guides connect with and respond to the needs of guests and are responsible for on-course rescues. Guides follow all operational policies and procedures to minimize risk and ensure quality program delivery in a manner consistent with BWA’s values.  Guides may be trained for and assigned to Segway tours, bike tours, rappel tours, hiking, walking, swimming tours and other adventure programs.

Supervisory Responsibilities 

This position has no direct reports.

Your Responsibilities 

• Facilitate zip line tours and provide an interactive and enjoyable experience for guests. Must be comfortable leading groups ranging in age from children to older adults.
• Effectively and safely handle attaching and detaching of equipment and have a complete understanding of the zipline experience and protocols.
• Create fun and safe work environment. Set the mood of the company by reflecting a positive enthusiastic tone.
• Teach and assist guests in precarious situations including lifting guests and performing first aid.
• Safely and responsibly provide transportation to and from the tour.
• Conduct and initiate pleasant and knowledgeable conversation about the course and tour and participate fully in the guest’s orientation and equipment setup.
• Care for all equipment.
• Maintain a professional Guide/Facilitation portfolio following ACCT guidelines.
• Conduct daily pre-use inspections of the tour and tour equipment. Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Assist with cleaning guest meet-up/orientation bathroom and garden areas, and support garden staff
• Maintain clean, professional personal hygiene

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required 

• Able to give clear, concise instructions to groups of people regarding rules, equipment usage, and safety concerns.
• Willingness and ability to work with a variety of age groups and backgrounds.
• Availability and willingness to work a wide variety of hours, including weekends.
• Must be legally able to work in the United States and pass a background investigation including annual motor vehicle report.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.

Experience and Education Required 

• CPR and First Aid certification required.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
• Previous experience in a customer service role preferred.
• Previous experience in ropes/challenge course, zipline tours, or outdoor recreation activities preferred.
• Previous experience delivering curriculum or content to diverse populations preferred.
• Lifeguard certification preferred.

Work Environment 

• The work environment of the job requires employees to work outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
• Some aspects of the job will occur at heights exceeding 100 feet.

Physical Requirements 

The physical demands described here are representative of those an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:

• Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, and the ability to lift/carry 50+ lbs.
• Requires the ability to work in a physically strenuous environment.
• Must be comfortable at heights exceeding 100 feet.
• After training, employees must be able to rescue a 275 lb. person from up to 100 feet above the ground using a variety of rescue techniques.
